Secure Storage Meets the City’s Best Trails

A modern, well-lit, secure indoor bike storage room featuring rows of sleek black vertical and horizontal wall-mounted racks holding several bicycles securely.

Residents at The Hale enjoy a secure, access-controlled bike storage room. NoMa is arguably the most bike-friendly pocket of the District. We’ve organized the best local routes into three categories:

    1. The Daily Commute: Efficient & Protected

If you’re biking to work, NoMa’s infrastructure is designed to keep you separated from heavy traffic.

    • The Metropolitan Branch Trail (MBT): This 8-mile paved trail runs right through the heart of NoMa. From The Hale, you can pick it up at the M Street NE ramp for a car-free straight shot south to Union Station (3 mins) or north to Brookland.
    • Downtown & Capitol Hill: Utilize protected bike lanes on 1st Street NE or Pennsylvania Avenue. These "low-stress" routes connect you to the halls of Congress or the K Street corridor in under 12 minutes.
    • 15-Minute City: Essentials like the REI Flagship and Trader Joe’s are accessible via dedicated lanes, making "car-free" grocery runs a breeze.

    2. The Weekend Escape: Trails Without End

Use NoMa as your launchpad to the region’s best trail networks.

    • The Anacostia Riverwalk Trail: Hop on the MBT south, cut through Union Station, and you’re on a 20-mile loop passing Nationals Park and the U.S. National Arboretum.
    • Rock Creek Park: Head west to reach Beach Drive. On weekends, large sections are closed to cars, offering miles of forested roads all to yourself.
    • The Capital Crescent Trail: For an ambitious ride, head through Georgetown to pick up this 11-mile trail that takes you all the way into Bethesda, MD.

    3. The Casual Cruise: Murals & The Beer Trail

    • The Metropolitan Beer Trail: The section of the MBT from NoMa to Brookland is now officially the "Beer Trail," featuring popular stops like Red Bear Brewing and Lost Generation just off the path.
    • NoMa in Color: The walls lining the MBT feature massive murals from the annual festival. It’s a slow-speed gallery tour right in your backyard.
    • Alethia Tanner Park: Just up the trail, this is the neighborhood's backyard—perfect for a ride to an outdoor movie night or a visit to the dog park.
